Domestic violence isn’t just about physical battery, scars and bruises. Verbal abuse and emotional battery is equally damaging and unacceptable.

The motive behind domestic violence is power. If not by physical strength then by emotional overpowering. Many women think that it is okay to be verbally abused as long as husband provides for her. This is a form of Stockholm syndrome because women love and listen to the abusive man because he is “nice” otherwise.

I agree Poonam, this is the biggest reason why women are afraid of walking out of abusive relationships. I think the biggest thing they need to know is that it isn’t their fault and that there is life after an abusive relationship.

Excellent post.

I too have met so many women who are conditioned to expect and accept abuse. I have known a woman who had horrific bruises all the time and yet kept making up excuses. And so many others with scars no one can see…..Why do they put up with it: because their parents would lose respect in society, because their children will carry a stigma, because their sisters will not get married….

I have read several accounts from people in blogosphere. Those who suffered from Stockholm syndrome and stuck to their abusive and destroying relationships. Its not something many of us understand, such people need lot of encouragement and boost to self-esteem.
