"In India, every 51minutes a woman is sexually harassed; every 21 minutes one woman is molested."

These numbers blew me away in a recent article I read, even though the reality of eve-teasing is very much a part of my every day life. It is something I even wrote about on my personal blog when I first arrived in India as one of the "cultural adjustments" I thought I would have to become accustomed to.

But when I read the blog, Blank Noise Spectators, I realized that the issue of the male gaze is something incredibly pervasive in India. But what to do? I try a variety of tactics – ignore it, flick people off, try and answer the gaze with an equally stubborn and confident glare. Somehow the culture of objectifying women has to change, and that starts with teaching your sons and daughters to respect themselves and others.
